A hinge works on increasing pressure in your fingers combined with the rotation of your hand
A back tension is for suprize shots , by pulling your elbow straight back at full draw you engage in using your back muscles to get the shot to break, its best for archers who stuggle with target panic

Are there actually different mechanicals in the release aid, or is it all just in how you use it?
Most hinges are triggered when you achieve a certain amount of rotation in the hinge. Once it gets to a certain point the hook will fall off a ledge and trigger.
The true back tension release I had used an internal spring which you set a little higher than your holding weight. You held a safety button until you came to full draw. Then you released the safety and began pulling into the back wall. Once you pulled hard enough the release would trigger.
